Rabbitgirl and Dogman spoke with Kris:

Q & A:

1. Who are your three best friends?

Kris: Bell, Marta and Eduardo

2. How many coffees do you drink a day? Do you have them alone or with a friend?

Kris: Too many! I am now down to 2-3 a day and I try to limit to drinking at work only.

3. If you could have a coffee with anyone in the world who would it be?

Kris: I would love to have a one on one coffee with Marilyn Monroe, here at Black Star Pastry.

4. Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever had a coffee?

Kris: At a bar

5. Have you ever had a coffee with a dog or rabbit before?

Kris: Yes, back at my home in Scotland with my jack russells.

IMG_7157.JPG_effected_smalll

6. Who is the most interesting person who has come into the café and had a coffee?

Kris: We get a few local Aussie celebrities here, including Toni Collette and Rose Byrne.

7. Why do coffee and friends go so well together?

Kris: Having a coffee is simply a great reason for people to meet up, chat, get together and de-brief one on one.

Having a coffee, in comparison to having a drink at a bar, you’re more alert and can enjoy cake with it!

IMG_7167.JPG_effected_small

8. What makes a good coffee and why do people come to your café?

Kris: As well as making the actual coffee and warming the milk perfectly, keeping the menu, coffee and business running simply and basic is the way to go.

We also love the arty bio-cups. We try to be environmentally friendly with the running of the cafe as well as using enviro products.

We also like supporting the arts and artists in sydney.

The school is situated in Sydney’s Eastern Suburb Randwick and has had such a great influence on the children at the school.

Headmaster Anne Hastings wrote this little note to Gillie and Marc:

Dear Gillie and Marc,

We are very pleased to see our new sculptures and it’s wonderful to see our young ones giving them a hug and even talking to them! Many, many thanks for your time, creativity and passion in making this a reality for us.

Gratefully,
Anne Hastings

Gillie and Marc worked closely with the schools community including principal, teachers and students and wanted to represent the schools philosophy in the form of a beautiful bronze sculpture.

We value the individuality of all students and encourage the development of their special interests and talents. Our objective is to extend our students to the best of their ability, and to foster a love of learning, a strong sense of community and a pride in their Jewish heritage. We strive to create an environment in harmony with the Jewish community in our society, in which genuine acceptance and understanding can develop. RUSSELL DRYSDALE RECREATED BY GILLIE AND MARC

On the weekend, Gillie and Marc headed to the Riverina town of West Wyalong to uncover one of their latest projects…

WestWylong_roadInfluential Australian artist Russell Drysdale became an iconic figure after painting a series of landscapes of drought-ravaged 1940s New South Wales. Drysdales painting “West Wyalong” is  recreated in bronze by Gillie and Marc for the town as a 3D version.
WestWylong

“This interactive sculpture is placed on the street at the exact angle Drysdale painted from,” says Gillie. “We’ve recreated the streetscape, only it is more than double the original size. It’s a real landmark for West Wyalong.”
